RAD, Advantech Unveil uCPE Carrier-Class White Box

September 27, 2017

Virtualization is venturing its way to a prominent position in networking; the growing presence of network functions virtualization (NFV) is transformative. And this week, RAD and Advantech announced a new partnership which is resulting in the launch of a joint solution, making network edge virtualization front and center.

The solution is an enhanced version of Advantech’s universal CPE (uCPE) white box with enhanced performance assurance capabilities coupled with carrier-class service demarcation. Coming in tow with the joint release is the delivery of premium, SLA-based IP services and Carrier Ethernet coupled with diagnostic tools capable of detect, localize and troubleshoot issues related to NFVI/VNF performance.

“For mainstream uCPE white boxes to transition to the carrier domain, there are several performance, functional and operational issues that need to be resolved before they can deliver on their agility and automation promise,” notes Ilan Tevet, RAD’s VP Marketing and Business Development.

The pairing goes deeper than the uCPE. The dynamic duo share interoperability of RAD’s linux-based vCPE-OS on Adavnatech’s FWA-1010VC, which makes it possible to provide a carrier-class NFV infrastructure (NFVI) with open management interfaces in addition to integrated and accelerated networking capabilities.

“RAD’s smart SFPs, serving as pluggable physical network functions (P-PNFs), bring real universality to the uCPE white box by helping resolve gaps such as Carrier Ethernet service demarcation, L2/L3 performance assurance and missing interfaces such as GPON, VDSL2, T1/E1 and T3/DS3. This ensures that service providers are free to deploy uCPE white boxes also in their current networks,” Tevet continued.

Those curious to learn more about this expanding ecosystem, and the newly released white box, have a couple of opportunities in the coming months to meet with the RAD/Advantech team. The carrier-class solution will be at the RAD booth during NFV and Carrier SDN Congress in Denver this week, and the Advantech booth during SDN & NFV World Congress in The Hague, NL October 9-13.

Day 2, Cisco Live! 2017

Tuesday was Day 2 of Cisco Live for Fiber Mountain and we continued to experience high levels of traffic, with many high value decision makers and influencers visiting our booth. One very interesting difference from most conferences I attend is that there are no titles on anyone's show badges. This allows open conversations without people being pretentious. I think this is a very good idea.
