Pivotal Cloud Foundry and Mirantis Join Forces on Integrated IaaS-PaaS Offering

May 14, 2015

Pivotal Cloud Foundry and Mirantis have entered into ooman interesting partnership to conjoin their solutions and address the needs of customers looking to deploy Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) solutions on top of private clouds. Specifically, Pivotal Cloud Foundry will be directly integrated into Mirantis OpenStack. This will provide clients with scalable, cloud-native applications that accelerate software development.

As background to the value of the combination of capabilities, Pivotal Cloud Foundry is an open source PaaS offering that gives developers a fully featured, ready-to-use cloud computing environment and application services. The solution is designed to streamline and manage application development, deployment and operations by enabling full visibility and control over the application lifecycle as well as an automatic deployment system.

Mirantis OpenStack is an open source Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platform, offering flexible virtualization services. The solution provides tools for automated deployment and management of OpenStack as well as a range of community projects and plugins.

The integrated IaaS-PaaS offering is focused on making it easy to quickly deploy private clouds that deliver a highly capable development platform. While currently the number of customers requiring such a solution is relatively small, the integrated offering enables Mirantis to offer value across the full stack with a more complete solution and therefore serves as an important positioning move.

“Our joint customers are seeking open, bleeding-edge technologies to accelerate their software development and bring new products to market faster,” said James Watters, Vice President and General Manager of the Cloud Platform Group at Pivotal. “Now, with Pivotal Cloud Foundry and Mirantis OpenStack, enterprises across various industries can rapidly deliver cloud-native, scalable applications to their customers with minimal risk and maximum ROI.”

Under the terms of the agreement, Mirantis has also become an official reseller of Pivotal Cloud Foundry, which will be available through the company’s OpenStack application catalog, Murano. It was also noted in the announcement of the partnership that Mirantis is prohibited from developing its own Cloud Foundry distribution. The company unexpectedly joined the Cloud Foundry Foundation about a month ago, but has since clarified the move as being taken purely to foster partnerships with various distribution vendors.

IaaS-PaaS solutions perfect together?  The simple answer is that it obviously depends on the partners. However, such combinations are likely to become common.

Day 2, Cisco Live!

Tuesday was Day 2 of Cisco Live for Fiber Mountain and we continued to experience high levels of traffic, with many high value decision makers and influencers visiting our booth. One very interesting difference from most conferences I attend is that there are no titles on anyone's show badges. This allows open conversations without people being pretentious. I think this is a very good idea.
