Dell Makes Major Cloud Infrastructure and Hyperscale Data Center Move

March 09, 2016

Dell has made a massive cloud infrastructure play announcing a slew of new solutions and services for building cloud infrastructure and hyperscale data centers. Offerings include pre-assembled and tested hardware, software and services, all designed to help deploy and manage extensive cloud infrastructure.

The move reinforces and expands Dell’s existing partnership with Microsoft and the Azure cloud infrastructure platform, helping to ramp up competition against AWS and Google. Dell and Microsoft are working together on joint solutions built using industry standards and geared toward helping customers take advantage of their existing data center investments. Cloud innovators may integrate public and/or private cloud infrastructure to build out their cloud and hyperscale data center initiatives, with both Dell and Microsoft offering support services.

“By listening to our customers in the hyperscale segment, we have learned what matters most to them in operating businesses at the extreme edge of efficiency,” said Roy Guillen, general manager of Dell’s Data Center Solutions division. “They need offerings that are designed with power efficiency and density at their core. They also demand fast and easy-to-deploy infrastructure solutions that speed up time to revenue and dramatically reduce TCO.”

On the server side, Dell has unveiled its new PowerEdge C-series, utilizing a hyperscale-inspired design. The servers offer high-density computing, efficient energy consumption and low cost of operation. New Cloud Services will include consulting, deployment and support as customers plan and manage their expanding cloud computing environments.

The first available offering will be the Dell Cloud solution for Web applications, a PaaS offering. Comprised of Dell cloud-optimized servers and services, the solution will also offer integrated Web application cloud software from Joyent. The PaaS solution will be geared toward helping customers address Web application development and deployment issues like unpredictable traffic, under-provisioning and migrating from development to production.

Finally, in tandem with the new servers and services, Dell has launched a new Dell Cloud Partner Program for ISVs. The program facilitates the purchasing and deployment of the new cloud solutions and offers ISVs blueprints for optimizing offerings on Dell platforms.

The new cloud infrastructure play has already attracted three new cloud ISV partners for Dell. The company has added Aster Data, Greenplum and Canonical to its cloud software ecosystem, joining existing partners like Microsoft and VMware. The companies specialize in cloud blueprints for data analytics, self-service data warehousing and IaaS cloud capabilities.

Day 2, Cisco Live!

Tuesday was Day 2 of Cisco Live for Fiber Mountain and we continued to experience high levels of traffic, with many high value decision makers and influencers visiting our booth. One very interesting difference from most conferences I attend is that there are no titles on anyone's show badges. This allows open conversations without people being pretentious. I think this is a very good idea.
