China Unicom Wins RANNY's Award In "Best 5G Initiative" with Cavium

October 13, 2017

Cavium and China Unicom announced China Unicom is the recipient of the 2017 RANNYs Award in the “Best 5G Initiative” category, using a comprehensive POD based on Cavium Silicon. The entire SDN/NFV platform POD, based solely on Cavium silicon, includes ThunderX ARM workload optimized COTS servers, XPliant programmable SDN Ethernet switch based white box switches, and OCTEON Fusion baseband SoC based Remote Radio Unit.

“In awarding the ‘Best 5G Initiative’ the RANNYs committee recognized China Unicom and Cavium’s unique partnership and innovation. We are very excited to collaborate with China Unicom to explore 5G target use cases like C-RAN and intelligent front-haul by utilizing the M-CORD software platform on an SDN/NFV data center POD and in real field deployment. This differentiated and highly scalable implementation of M-CORD POD using Cavium silicon-based white box hardware readily supports implementation of next generation network topologies,” said Raj Singh Vice President and General Manager of the Network and Communication Group at Cavium.

The two have been working with the POD to collaborate on C-RAN and 5G use cases utilizing 3GPP compliant commercial UE’s with real-time traffic. Also involved in the trials are SDN-managed virtualized and disaggregated end-to-end mobile infrastructure, network slicing, and intelligent front-haul, which are all advanced 5G ideas.

“We are excited to be the winner of the Best 5G Initiative RANNYs award. We appreciate the recognition of the results of our collaboration with Cavium in implementing and testing 5G use cases,” said Dr. Tang Xiongyan, CTO of Network Technology Research Institute, China Unicom.

M-CORD and virtualized RAN trials on Cavium silicon are still underway so this is just the beginning of the developments for the partners.

Are you looking forward to the day when 5G officially arrives?

Day 2, Cisco Live! 2017

Tuesday was Day 2 of Cisco Live for Fiber Mountain and we continued to experience high levels of traffic, with many high value decision makers and influencers visiting our booth. One very interesting difference from most conferences I attend is that there are no titles on anyone's show badges. This allows open conversations without people being pretentious. I think this is a very good idea.
