Transforming Network Infrastructure Week in Review: Cisco, Ericsson, TELoIP

January 21, 2017

As our Transforming Network Infrastructure coverage this week illustrates, the only constant is change.

Here’s what I mean.

Cisco and Ericsson have been tapped by Vodafone Hutchison Australia to help upgrade the carrier’s core network to be more agile, programmable, and virtualized.

Ericsson will provide technology for and be the leader of the effort. The Ericsson solutions involve will include the company’s Hyperscale Datacenter System and software components like the Ericsson Cloud Execution Environment, Ericsson Cloud Manager, and Cloud SDN controller.

Cisco will contribute its WAN Automation Engine, Cisco Network Services Orchestrator, and virtual network functions including the IOS XR 9000v and Cloud Services Router 1000v. The Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance and Cisco Firepower security gateway will also be in the mix.

California Telecom is upgrading its network too. The ISP and managed services provider has aligned with TELoIP Inc. to deliver SD-WAN services to businesses in southern California.

In other software-defined networking news, Megaport Inc. has announced plans to leverage EdgeConneX’s SDN-based interconnection services in its data centers in Europe and North America. That will allow large businesses to have direct, private, and scalable connections to popular cloud service providers including Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.

“It’s important for enterprises to have readily available access to cloud services providers,” said Nicole Cooper, executive vice president of North America at Megaport. “Megaport’s alliance with EdgeConneX is a major milestone in the mission toward enhanced connectivity at the edge of the network, bringing direct cloud access where it’s needed most. Our advanced software-defined network and robust provider ecosystem are driving cloud adoption throughout the enterprise community. With these tools, we are looking forward to providing EdgeConneX customers with the necessary means to achieve fast and reliable connectivity to mission-critical cloud services.”

Transforming Network Infrastructure this week also reported on a recent blog post by Fiber Mountain that offers some advice on how to ensure a successful digital transformation. It also indicates that digital transformation is journey, not a destination.

“Whether starting with an organization-wide initiative or a small scale implementation, keep close track of the evolving ‘present state,’” wrote Anthea Strezze, marketing coordinator at Fiber Mountain. “This will help you to respond to unexpected developments along the way, as well as the evolving competitive environment. Constant fine-tuning will help to keep your organization agile, responsive, and competitive in the face of changing business priorities and customer expectations.”

Day 2, Cisco Live! 2017

Tuesday was Day 2 of Cisco Live for Fiber Mountain and we continued to experience high levels of traffic, with many high value decision makers and influencers visiting our booth. One very interesting difference from most conferences I attend is that there are no titles on anyone's show badges. This allows open conversations without people being pretentious. I think this is a very good idea.
