FalconStor FreeStor Helps German Utility Achieve Software-Defined Data Center

April 26, 2016

It’s no secret that software-defined networking (SDN) is changing the way networking works in enterprise and network operator environments. After all, SDN and network functions virtualization (NFV) provide a level of control unmatched by traditional networking architecture, along with reduced downtime faster service creation and more. It’s no surprise, then, that many also consider SDN to be the future of data center networking.

As a 16-year innovator of software-defined storage (SDS) solutions, FalconStor Software knows very well the ways virtualization can benefit the data center. The company was recently selected by German utility service provider Saarbrücker Stadtwerke to provide its SDS platform FreeStor as a key component of its vision of a fully software-defined data center.

As the biggest communal service provider in Saarbrücken, Saarbrücker Stadtwerke employs over 1000 to provide water, electricity, long-distance heating and more. As such, the utility service provider needs its software-defined data center to be highly available across two locations. These locations guarantee the IT infrastructure for their own subsidiaries, as well as for clients of IT services in Germany.

In order to achieve greater flexibility and scalability, Stadtwerke has been leveraging software-defined technologies wherever possible. The new virtualized storage layer based on technology from FreeStor offers synchronous mirroring of all data to optimize capacity and business continuity across their storage infrastructure.

In addition to FreeStor SDS, Stadtwerke uses server virtualization, VDI, SDN and other modern components, as well as a context-defined security solution and big data management with real-time data analytics.

"Stadtwerke Saarbrücken is a showcase early adopter of software-defined technologies, and is already realizing financial savings from that decision," said Stefan Hirsch, regional director of Central Europe and Nordics at FalconStor. "SDS is one of the most important pieces to complete their vision of a completely software-defined datacenter. FreeStor provides a critical SDS foundation that enables Stadtwerke the ability to offer their customers flexible and scalable services."

The FreeStor SDS platform offers storage virtualization, intelligent abstraction, analytics and unified data services. FreeStor also leverages a virtualized storage pool to abstract the provisioning of storage, regardless of vendor, type or location.

Day 2, Cisco Live! 2017

Tuesday was Day 2 of Cisco Live for Fiber Mountain and we continued to experience high levels of traffic, with many high value decision makers and influencers visiting our booth. One very interesting difference from most conferences I attend is that there are no titles on anyone's show badges. This allows open conversations without people being pretentious. I think this is a very good idea.
