Equinix, AquaComms to Lay Fiber Optic Cable Joining New York, London

August 24, 2015

Equinix, Inc., a provider of carrier-neutral data centers and Internet exchanges to facilitate low-cost, reliable worldwide interconnection, recently announced a partnership with subsea network solutions provider AquaComms, in which the two companies will deploy a new transatlantic fiber optic system called America Europe Connect, or AEConnect. The subsea cable will stretch from Long Island, NY, to western Ireland in order to provide high-capacity connectivity between New York and London as well as beyond into greater Europe.

Both regions are among the top five global metropolitan areas for peak international Internet traffic, according to industry analyst firm TeleGeography, and the route between them has the second highest amount of international Internet traffic with peaks reaching multiple terabits. This extensive activity fueled by constantly growing mobile, content delivery, video streaming, telepresence, social media and cloud-based data traffic clearly demonstrates the need for a high-capacity cable interconnecting the two regions.

“Responding to the demand AquaComms is seeing for high capacity, high reliability connectivity between North America and Europe, we made a strategic decision to deploy with Equinix,” said Greg Varisco, COO of AquaComms. “Their data centers in New York and London act as major international hubs for network traffic, offering our customers the ability to extend existing networks or expand into new markets.”

The cable will provide more than 52 Tbps of capacity and will utilize cutting-edge optical technologies so the advanced subsea system can effectively support bandwidth-intensive applications, which are inherently essential to global data centers, cloud-based networks, financial services market participants and content providers. Furthermore, global businesses need more capacity to run IT operations, especially cloud-based applications, and the Equinix Cloud Exchange provides direct connectivity to industry-leading cloud service providers via dedicated private connections.

“Equinix has the largest concentration of NSP/CSP's, financial, media and entertainment, gaming, [and] e-Commerce customers available in our business ecosystems,” said Jim Poole, Vice President of Global Service Providers at Equinix. “This new bilateral submarine connectivity gives both Equinix’ and AquaComms’ customers yet another choice for driving business advantage in today's global economy.”

The current business climate is thriving on the increasing level of worldwide network interconnection and will continue to grow as advanced fiber optic cables such as AEConnect become more prevalent. Physical location is no longer a hindrance to near-instantaneous global communication thanks to fiber optic networks, and as infrastructure continues to undergo expansion and improvements these networks can handle more diverse and advanced data transmissions. The interconnected era of the digital economy will therefore foster the most efficient global communications ever known.

Tuesday was Day 2 of Cisco Live for Fiber Mountain and we continued to experience high levels of traffic, with many high value decision makers and influencers visiting our booth. I think this is a very good idea.
