Which Technology is Driving the Most Change in Your Data Center?

September 29, 2015

For those of you who are frequent visitors to the Transforming Network Infrastructure Community (and if you are not, you should bookmark our homepage) you are aware that as the technology for transforming data centers evolves, there are lots of questions. In fact, if you look to the right on our home page, you will see a section called “What do you think?”

The current question which we hope you will answer is, “What are your biggest data center complaints or pain points?”  You not only have six commonly cited ones, but we have also left room for anything else that is a challenge.  Please vote early and not too often.

With that said, we thought you would be extremely interested in the answers to our inaugural question from a few weeks ago: “What Technology is Driving the Most Change in Your Data Center?

First, a thank you to all who participated. While obviously somewhat anecdotal, due to the less than scientific method of capturing the answers, we do believe that the responses were very much in line with what data center operators are telling us, their solutions providers and industry analysts.

Without further ado, here is how the community is looking at the technologies that are forcing/encouraging data centers to transform. It should be remembered that participants were only allowed to pick one from the list.

  • Cloud - 42 percent
  • Software-Defined Network (SDN) – 32 percent
  • Virtualization – 18 percent
  • Energy Efficiency – 6 percent
  • Other (things like more space) – 2 percent

While it is likely the result of the question only giving respondents one option instead of a category like “All of the Above”, the fact that Cloud was most cited is no surprise.  What was a bit of a surprise, and something to look for as industry analyst do their reports, was the strength of SDN as a driver with double the interest of Virtualization

The relative low percentage of those saying Energy Efficiency was also not surprising. It is clear that data center operators, while obviously mindful of costs, are much more concerned with cutting expenses via SDN and Virtualization in order to have environments that are more agile, scalable, secure and easy to manage.

We will be rolling out a series of question over the next many months, and once again urge you to take a moment to register your vote.  Plus, don’t be surprised if this first question pops up again.  As snapshots in time, such questions are interesting and only become more so when viewed comparatively.  In addition, we are going to keep a close eye on the “Other” category in all of our questions, as the one thing we do know is that challenges and opportunities of all types are changing quickly in the community and the pace of change is accelerating.

Please feel free to send along any comments, and if you have a question for the community let us know so we can find out how our members feel.

Day 2, Cisco Live! 2017

Tuesday was Day 2 of Cisco Live for Fiber Mountain and we continued to experience high levels of traffic, with many high value decision makers and influencers visiting our booth. One very interesting difference from most conferences I attend is that there are no titles on anyone's show badges. This allows open conversations without people being pretentious. I think this is a very good idea.
