Norman AS Continues Cyber Security Awareness Month Video Series With Episode Highlighting the Challenges of Securing the Smart Grid

SAN DIEGO --(Business Wire)--

Norman AS, the global leader in threat discovery, malware forensics and analysis, and industrial control system protection solutions, today released the third installment of its ongoing video series, "Inside Network Security: Cybercrime, Malware and Today's Emerging Threats."

Featuring the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of San Diego Gas & Electric, Jessie Knight, this episode is titled, "It's a Brand New Utility World." Knight answers probing interview questions about energy utility security from behind-the-scenes host, Norman AS General Manager for North America, Darin Andersen.

After overseeing the most successful smart grid deployment in the country, Knight explores the increased security challenges that go hand-in-hand with managing new information exchange technologies. With more than 2.4 million meters deployed in his system, Knight recounts the transfrmation from the centralized energy utility system of the past to today's "Islands of activity with different kinds of energy supplies and different kinds of usages."

In addition to managing digital information to and from third party providers and suppliers of new energy sources, today's energy facilities must also communicate usage data with their end-use customers. Knight describes the importance of managing these relationships with stringent information security standards to guard against the inevitable threats and "bad actors."

"Knight accurately describes the complications of securing automated data supplies," said Andersen. "As smart grid technology enables enhanced communication, it presents more areas of entry for cybercriminals. Well-trained cyber security teams and experts like Knight and are crucial to the protection of our energy utilities."

Norman's video series to promote cyber security awareness will continue next week. This week's video is available today on the Norman AS YouTube (News - Alert) channel http://www.youtube.com/watch v=ehbWecYGbq0.

The History of Fiber in Data Centers, Part II

As I stated at the close of "The History of Data Centers, Part I," Fiber Mountain™ believes data centers must evolve from hub and spoke architecture—in which traffic is aggregated and delivered to a central hub—to a design that includes many direct connections.

Three Things Your Boss Wants—No, Needs—To Know About Glass Core

Fiber Mountain™ CEO and Founder— plus my longtime friend—M.H. Raza does a terrific job on this blog of explaining how our Glass Core™ architecture transforms the way data centers build their network infrastructure.

The History of Fiber in Data Centers, Part I: Past and Present

Fiber Mountain, as our company name suggests, believes fiber cabling must play a central role in helping data centers scale affordably as bandwidth needs continue to grow. Before I go further down the path to the future, however, I want to back up and provide a high-level history of fiber in the data center.

Four Reasons to Make the Leap to SDN in Your Data Center

I'm always fascinated by what causes a business trend to emerge, grow and sometimes expand to actually redefining the industry as a whole. Having spent years in the technology field, I've found the networking sector particularly exciting in this regard because true innovation can and does transform entire segments of our industry. Revolutionary processes and technologies make past deployments and best practices look laughable in light of recent innovations.

Reflections From the Fiber Mountain Launch

Over the past weeks and months, the Fiber Mountain team has worked hard to prepare for our company launch at this year's Interop New York. In this post, I want to share our thoughts from the days leading up to the October 1st unveiling and about the event itself at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan.
